Teaching Black History Month (UK)
On-Demand
Virtual
Throughout 2021, racism has continued to dominate the headlines, from the release of the government’s contentious Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities report to the violent abuse directed at England’s young footballers during Euro 2020. Whilst the roots of such racism are complex, the white-washing of British history has no doubt played a role in allowing racist views of difference and belonging to persist.
With black history having been silenced or sidelined in the curriculum, Black History Month offers us an important opportunity to expand our understanding of Black history, commit to new ways of learning and teaching it, and support our students in making connections between the past and present.
This one-hour webinar explores how we should engage with Black History Month in a way that acknowledges and celebrates black British history as British history.
