English & Language Arts

This online mini-course is designed to give middle and high school educators the tools and practices to explore key questions about text selection in the English language arts (ELA) classroom. Participants will engage in self-reflection, explore Facing History resources, and be in conversation with other educators as they consider what texts to choose for classroom use. This mini-course includes both self-guided work and facilitated live Zoom sessions. View the full schedule below.

Objectives

Educators will:

  • Explore their core beliefs about teaching and learning and consider how their own identities and past experiences as ELA students might shape their pedagogy and curricular decisions.
  • Examine how knowing their students as unique individuals, as well as understanding their relationship to reading and writing, can help them support their students intellectually and emotionally.
  • Reflect on their course as a whole and on particular texts that can address an opportunity, challenge, need, or new direction they would like to pursue with their students.
