An honest exploration of Canada’s past helps young people understand what it means to be Canadian today, analyze the ethical questions that confront our nation, and consider the choices that individuals have to shape the country’s future. Through an examination of case studies in Canada’s changing history of inclusion, we’ll explore Canada’s contemporary identity, continuity and change in our nation’s universe of obligation, Canada’s response to the Holocaust, and the history of Canada’s Residential Schools and the call for reconciliation. 

In this self-guided workshop, you will:

  1. Learn about the Facing History resources that can supplement your Canadian history courses.
  2. Engage in active learning strategies that reinforce historical thinking skills, inquiry skills, and civil discourse for difficult conversations.
  3. Learn a new way of structuring a curriculum to help students connect history to their own lives and the choices they make.

Workshop Structure

This workshop consists of two introductory modules followed by four optional case studies. The introductory modules lay the foundation for Facing History’s pedagogical approach, while the case studies represent particular points in the Canadian history curriculum. After moving through the introductory modules, you will be able to engage with any or all of the following case studies.

  • Welcome Module
  • Identity and Obligation Module
  • Case Study: Eugenics
  • Case Study: Xenophobia and Antisemitism
  • Case Study: The Holocaust
  • Case Study: The Residential Schools 

 

Workshop At-a-Glance Details

Time Commitment: We estimate that it will take about one hour to complete each of the content modules. The modules are designed to be self-guided, and you can work at your own pace through the workshop.

Cost: Free. The registration fee and event fee for this online workshop have been waived, thanks to generous funding from Facing History and Ourselves donors and partner organizations.
